Domino Sugar Refinery complex (former industrial refinery buildings)

The Domino Sugar Refinery on the East River in Williamsburg operated in various forms from the 19th century until its sugar refining operations ceased in 2004. Large portions of the refinery complex stood vacant and deteriorating for years, becoming a prominent example of abandoned industrial architecture visible from Manhattan. The site was a focal point for preservation and redevelopment debates before large-scale redevelopment began in the 2010s. The refinery's iconic painted signage and silo structures remained visible landmarks during the period of abandonment.
