Armed Forces Retirement Home (Old Soldiers' Home)

The Soldiers' Home campus was established in 1851 as a federal residential facility for retired and disabled veterans and contains surviving mid-19th-century institutional buildings and landscaped grounds. President Abraham Lincoln frequently visited and spent time at the Soldiers' Home during the Civil War, and the campus is designated as a National Historic Landmark District. The site continues to operate as the Armed Forces Retirement Home and preserves examples of 19th-century military welfare infrastructure.
