Arnold Arboretum - Olmsted design and public collection

The Arnold Arboretum at 125 Arborway was established in 1872 and designed in part by Frederick Law Olmsted as the scientific and public tree collection component of Boston’s Emerald Necklace park system. Operated by Harvard University as a public research and education resource, the Arboretum is widely cited as the oldest public arboretum in North America and retains extensive mapped collections and research plantings. Its landscape and plantings are central to local horticultural lore and seasonal public programming.
