Caffè Trieste (North Beach espresso house)

Caffè Trieste opened in 1956 at 601 Vallejo Street and is often credited as the first espresso coffeehouse in San Francisco's North Beach. The cafe became a gathering place for Beat Generation writers, musicians, and artists and hosted readings and informal performances. It remains an operational cafe noted for its role in the city's mid-20th-century literary and music scenes.
