Mary Allen Seminary

Mary Allen Seminary, established in 1886 in Crockett, Texas, was the first black women's college in the state. Initially a parochial school, it evolved into an accredited junior college by 1933, featuring an all-black faculty. The institution played a crucial role in providing education to freed black women, shifting its curriculum over time to include vocational training. After closing in 1943, it reopened in 1944 and continued to operate until 1972. Today, it stands as a significant historical site, reflecting the educational advancements for African American women in Texas.
