Harry Ransom Center - earliest surviving photograph

The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin holds the earliest surviving permanent photograph, Nicéphore Niépce’s View from the Window at Le Gras (c. 1826–27), in its special collections. The center also maintains extensive rare books and manuscripts, including a Gutenberg Bible copy among its holdings. These items are preserved under archival conditions and are typically accessible only during curated exhibitions or by appointment for research, making in-person viewing limited and comparatively hard to find.
