Alcatraz Island Federal Penitentiary and 1962 escape

Alcatraz Island operated as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963 and housed inmates including Al Capone and George 'Machine Gun' Kelly. In June 1962 Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin executed a carefully planned escape from cellblocks into San Francisco Bay; they were never definitively found. The fate of the 1962 escapees remains disputed and the incident prompted widespread review of escape procedures at U.S. prisons. Alcatraz Island is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is a National Historic Landmark.
