Charles Street Jail (now Liberty Hotel)

The Charles Street Jail was constructed between 1851 and 1853 to a design by Gridley J.F. Bryant and served as a county jail for Boston for over a century. The jail closed in 1990 and the building was adaptively reused and reopened as the Liberty Hotel in 2007, preserving much of the original granite structure and central rotunda. The site is often cited as an early example of large-scale adaptive reuse of 19th-century penal infrastructure in the city.
