Carpenter House (Valhalla, New York)

The Carpenter House, located in Valhalla, New York, is a historic site dating back to the pre-American Revolutionary War era. It was the site of a tragic skirmish on February 3, 1780, when British troops attacked the nearby Young house, resulting in the deaths of 14 American soldiers and the capture of 90 others. The Carpenter House sheltered American soldiers recovering from smallpox, but the British forces forced them into the harsh winter, leading to further fatalities. Although the house itself was demolished to make way for Westchester Community College, its eighteenth-century kitchen was preserved and relocated to the Campbell house nearby, making it a point of interest for history enthusiasts and tourists alike.
