Smith's Tavern

Smith's Tavern is a historic two-story clapboard building located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1975. Built in 1790 by Captain William James Smith, a revolutionary army officer, it served as a stagecoach stop offering room and board. The tavern features unique architectural elements, including corbelled gable end chimneys and a distinctive diamond-patterned tapestry in one chimney. It overlooks historic 18th-century roads, including Blackstock Road, a key route for cattle drives, and is near the site of the Walnut Grove plantation, known for its revolutionary skirmish. The surrounding land was developed in the 1970s, but the tavern remains a significant landmark for visitors interested in South Carolina's rich history.
