George Metesky ('Mad Bomber') and Consolidated Edison targets

From the mid-1940s through 1956, George Metesky planted a series of bombs at locations across New York City, frequently targeting Consolidated Edison facilities and employees. His campaign prompted a large multi-agency investigation that included linguistic analysis of his letters; Metesky was arrested in 1957 and subsequently declared legally insane and confined to a psychiatric hospital. The Consolidated Edison Building at 4 Irving Place is often referenced in accounts of the bombing campaign because Con Ed was a repeated target. The case influenced later investigative techniques for serial politically motivated attacks in the city.
