Indianapolis Motor Speedway - Yard of Bricks

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909 with a brick-paved racing surface; most of the track was later paved over, but a one-yard strip of the original bricks remains embedded at the start/finish line. That exposed strip of bricks, commonly called the 'Yard of Bricks,' is preserved as a physical remnant of the track's early 20th-century construction. The speedway complex and its retained brick strip are tangible examples of early automobile racing infrastructure still present at the site.
