Portland Japanese Garden - imported ornamental stones

The Portland Japanese Garden contains carefully sited ornamental stones (yo-seki and other scholar's stones) that were selected, some imported from Japan, and placed as principal compositional elements in the Garden's Strolling Pond, Tea Garden, and Sand & Stone areas. The garden documents the provenance and traditional placement of these stones as part of its efforts to recreate classical Japanese garden design. The garden opened in 1967 and is noted for its use of rock arrangements to structure views and spaces.
