Cholmley House

Cholmley House, also known as Whitby Hall, is a historic 17th-century banqueting house located next to the ruins of Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire, England. Built in 1672 by Sir Hugh Cholmeley, the house served as a residence for the Cholmeley family, who acquired the abbey and surrounding land after its dissolution in 1539. The property features a square forecourt known as the Stone Garden, which includes a replica of the Borghese Gladiator. After the family moved to Howsham Hall in 1743, Cholmley House fell into disrepair, suffering significant damage over the years. It was eventually restored and repurposed as a museum and visitor center for the Abbey site, reopening in 2002. Today, it offers insights into the area's rich history and serves as a gateway for visitors exploring the iconic Whitby Abbey ruins.
