Artstetten Castle

Artstetten Castle, located in the picturesque Wachau valley of Lower Austria, is a historic site known for being the final resting place of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, whose assassination sparked World War I. Originally owned by various noble families, it became a Habsburg summer residence before extensive renovations by Franz Ferdinand in the late 19th century. The castle features a museum dedicated to the archduke and is surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Despite its tumultuous history, including confiscation during the Nazi regime, it remains a private property of the Hohenberg family, with parts open to the public. Visitors can explore its rich history and view the crypt where notable members of the Hohenberg family are buried.
