Elmwood (Union, West Virginia)

Elmwood, also known as the Hugh Caperton House, is a historic home near Union, West Virginia, built in the 1830s. This two-story brick dwelling showcases Greek Revival architecture, featuring a grand front facade with limestone steps, a veranda, and a second-story balcony adorned with Chinese Chippendale railings. It was constructed by Congressman Hugh Caperton and later became the residence of Allen T. Caperton, the first ex-Confederate elected to the U.S. Senate post-Civil War. Elmwood was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 and is situated within the Union Historic District, recognized in 1990, making it a significant site for history enthusiasts and tourists alike.
