Longfellow Bridge rehabilitation and 'Salt-and-Pepper' towers

The Longfellow Bridge, which connects Boston's Beacon Hill/Back Bay to Cambridge and carries the MBTA Red Line, is commonly nicknamed the 'Salt-and-Pepper Bridge' for the appearance of its two cylindrical towers. A multi-year reconstruction project managed by MassDOT began in the late 2000s and major work was completed in 2018 to restore structural elements and tracks for the Red Line. The bridge is a prominent crossing of the Charles River and was the subject of extensive historic preservation and transportation coordination during the rehabilitation.
