Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party picketing the White House (1917–1919)

From 1917 to 1919, suffragists organized by Alice Paul and the National Woman's Party maintained regular pickets outside the White House to press for women's suffrage. Those demonstrations, often called the Silent Sentinels, are documented as among the first sustained protests directly targeting a sitting president's policies. The pickets were centered on the White House grounds and Lafayette Park adjacent to the presidential residence.
