Modelo Brewery

Modelo Brewery, located in Cotorro, Havana, Cuba, was established in 1948 by architect Enrique Luis Varela to meet the rising demand for Hatuey beer. The brewery gained fame when Ernest Hemingway featured Hatuey in his novel 'The Old Man and the Sea' and celebrated his Nobel Prize there. With a modern architectural style, it produced 3.5 million liters in its first 19 months and controlled 50% of Cuba's beer market by 1959. However, in 1960, the brewery's assets were confiscated by the revolutionary government, leading to a decline in production. In 2011, the Bacardi family resumed brewing under the Hatuey label in the U.S.
