Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores) and Ohlone history

Mission San Francisco de Asís, commonly called Mission Dolores, was founded in 1776 as part of the Spanish mission system. Historical records document that local Ohlone people were brought to the mission, where many were baptized and lived under mission authority. The mission's cemetery and archival records preserve evidence of Native Californian burials and population decline associated with the mission period. Archaeological and historical studies of the site have been used to document the impact of the mission system on Ohlone communities.
