Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (former Bergstrom AFB)

Austin–Bergstrom International Airport opened in 1999 on the site of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, which closed in 1993. The airport redevelopment reused the former military airfield footprint and transformed it into Austin’s principal commercial airport. The site’s history as Bergstrom AFB is part of local military and Cold War-era history and is frequently noted in accounts of the airport’s planning and construction.
