Herndon House

The Herndon House, established in 1858 in Downtown Omaha, Nebraska, was a prominent early hotel that served as the Union Pacific Railroad's headquarters for over 50 years. Named after U.S. Navy Lieutenant William Lewis Herndon, it was renowned for its luxurious accommodations and fine dining, attracting notable guests such as military leaders, politicians, and even Brigham Young. The hotel also hosted Omaha's first dramatic performance and played a significant role during the Civil War, serving as a mustering ground for soldiers. After its closure as a hotel in 1870, it continued to function as a railroad headquarters until its demolition in 1922, making it a key historical site in Omaha's development.
