Lovejoy's Hotel

Lovejoy's Hotel was a prominent establishment in New York City from the 1830s to 1870, located at the intersection of Park Row and Beekman Street. Originally owned by Jonathan Lovejoy, it later became the property of John P. Huggins, who managed it for two decades. The hotel was notable for hosting significant historical events, including a meeting between Alvan E. Bovay and Horace Greeley during the 1852 Whig National Convention, where the idea for the Republican Party was born. The hotel also faced threats during the Civil War, as it was targeted by the Confederate Army of Manhattan. After its closure in 1870, the building transitioned to office space, housing various newspapers until it was ultimately demolished in the late 1880s.
