Fort Negley Civil War Fortification

Fort Negley was built by Union forces during 1862–1863 as a stone fortification overlooking Nashville; much of its construction was carried out by African American laborers including formerly enslaved people and contrabands. The site is now Fort Negley Park, preserved as an archaeological and historic site documenting Civil War military construction. The park hosts periodic commemorative events and interpretive programs related to the war and the laborers who built the fort.
