George Washington's First Inauguration Site

On April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the United States on the balcony of the Federal Hall building that stood at this site. The current Federal Hall National Memorial, which marks the location of that event, was constructed in 1842 as the U.S. Custom House and later repurposed. The memorial contains exhibits about the early federal government and Washington's inauguration. The site is a documented focal point of early U.S. constitutional history.
