Maupoleum

The Maupoleum was a controversial building located on Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam, constructed between 1971 and 1994. Initially intended to revitalize a historically Jewish neighborhood, it became infamous for its unattractive Brutalist design, earning the nickname 'Mausoleum' due to its perceived ugliness. Designed by architect Piet Zanstra, the building housed offices and classrooms for the University of Amsterdam but was criticized for its isolation and failure to blend with the urban environment. Despite some efforts to preserve it as a 1960s architectural example, the Maupoleum was demolished in 1994, making way for new structures that better fit the area's aesthetic and improved street life. Today, visitors can explore the vibrant shops and cafes that replaced this once-hated landmark.
