Original Pennsylvania Station (demolished 1963)

The original Pennsylvania Station, designed by McKim, Mead & White and opened in 1910, occupied the block now anchored by Madison Square Garden. The Beaux-Arts above-ground structure and train shed were demolished in 1963, a loss that helped galvanize the modern New York City preservation movement and contributed to creation of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The current subterranean Penn Station and Madison Square Garden occupy the site of the former building.
