Atlas at Rockefeller Center

The 15-foot bronze Atlas, created by Lee Lawrie (with sculptural work by Rene Paul Chambellan) and installed in 1937, stands in the International Building plaza at Rockefeller Center holding a celestial sphere. Positioned on Fifth Avenue outside 30 Rockefeller Plaza, the Art Deco statue faces St. Patrick's Cathedral and is a well-known visual landmark in Midtown Manhattan. Atlas has appeared in numerous films and publications and is part of the complex's original 1930s character and architectural program.
