Temple of Tellus

The Temple of Tellus, a sanctuary in Ancient Rome dedicated to the goddess of the earth, was established in 268 BCE by Publius Sempronius Sophus after a vow during a battle. Located in the Carinae district on Esquiline Hill, it was near the homes of notable figures like Cicero and Mark Antony. Cicero restored the temple in 54 BCE, and it served as a venue for Senate meetings, featuring a map of Italy on its walls. Although destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE, it was rebuilt and remained significant into the 4th century. The temple's dedication was celebrated on December 13, reflecting the long-standing Roman reverence for Tellus.
