Hole-in-the-Rock (Papago Park) - tafoni sandstone formation

Hole-in-the-Rock is a naturally eroded tafoni in the red sandstone of Papago Park, characterized by rounded cavities and openings produced by wind and water weathering. The formation frames sun and sky views that draw visitors and is featured in Phoenix park and geology guides. Some local interpretive sources propose prehistoric use of the feature for solar observations, but that archaeological interpretation is debated among researchers.
