Mission District named for Mission Dolores

San Francisco's Mission District takes its name from Mission San Francisco de Asís (Mission Dolores). The neighborhood developed on lands that were once part of the mission's rancho and agricultural holdings during the 19th century. The mission remained a geographic and cultural reference point as the area urbanized through the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
