Big Woods School

The Big Woods School, a historic one-room schoolhouse in Aurora, Illinois, was constructed between 1917 and 1918 to replace an earlier structure. Notable for its Craftsman design, it was among the first schools in DuPage County built following the 1915 Sanitation Law, which established modern safety standards. The building features thoughtful design elements such as playground space and indoor plumbing. After closing in 1963 due to school consolidation, it was sold to a private owner and is now preserved by a not-for-profit group. The school was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in educational history.
