The Dr. William Rainey Holt House, also known as The Homestead, is a historic Greek Revival style home built in 1834, located in Lexington, North Carolina. This two-story dwelling features distinctive Palladian windows and a center-hall plan, reflecting the architectural style of the period. The house has undergone several renovations, including significant updates in the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. It is notable for its connection to Dr. William Rainey Holt, a physician and prominent figure in the Civil War era, whose home was occupied by Union soldiers. Holt was also a pioneer in agricultural practices in North Carolina, introducing purebred livestock to the state. The property, which includes former servants quarters known as 'Lizzie's house', was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in American history and architecture.
