Newbuildings Place

Newbuildings Place is a remarkable 17th-century Artisan Mannerist house located near Shipley in West Sussex. Built around 1683 by Philip Caryll, the house features unique architectural elements, including priest holes reflecting its Roman Catholic heritage. It served various purposes over the centuries, including housing paupers in the 1820s and 1830s. The house is notable for being the former residence of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, a prominent author and Arabian horse breeder, who made significant enhancements to the property. Blunt is buried in the grounds, having requested a unique burial in his travelling carpet. Today, the estate is owned by John Lytton, 5th Earl of Lytton, and is recognized as a Grade I listed building, showcasing its historical and architectural significance. Visitors can also explore the picturesque grounds, which include a Grade II listed barn and dovecote.
