Fort Caroline National Memorial and indigenous occupation evidence

Fort Caroline National Memorial commemorates the 1564 French Huguenot attempt at colonization and interprets contacts between Europeans and local Timucua and other indigenous peoples. Archaeological surveys in the Fort Caroline area and the broader Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve have documented indigenous occupation layers and artifacts predating European contact.
