Cedar County Courthouse (Iowa)

The Cedar County Courthouse, located in Tipton, Iowa, is a significant historical site that has served as the center of county administration since its establishment. The current structure, completed in 1968, is the third courthouse in the county's history, following a series of earlier buildings dating back to the 1840s. The first courthouse was a log building in Rochester, which was never fully utilized for court functions. After moving the county seat to Tipton, a frame courthouse was constructed in 1845, later replaced by a brick building in 1859 featuring a distinctive cupola. This brick structure underwent renovations in 1889, but the cupola was removed in 1948 due to safety concerns. The modern courthouse reflects a blend of historical significance and contemporary architecture, making it an interesting visit for tourists and researchers alike.
