Luna Jacal

Luna Jacal, the historic residence of Mexican pioneer Gilberto Luna, is a unique example of an indigenous Tejano dwelling built around 1890 in the Texas desert, near what is now Big Bend National Park. This low sandstone and limestone structure features a distinctive roof made from ocotillo branches, showcasing the adaptation to the harsh environment. Luna, who lived to be over 108 years old, is noted for his peaceful relations with local Comanche and Apache tribes during a tumultuous period. The jacal was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and has undergone restoration efforts, making it a significant site for both tourists and researchers interested in Texas history and indigenous architecture.
