Howe-Childs Gate House

The Howe-Childs Gate House, located at 5918 Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh's Shadyside neighborhood, is a historic structure built around 1861. Known originally as 'Willow Cottage,' it is recognized as the oldest wood-frame house in Pittsburgh and a significant example of the city's architectural heritage from the 'Millionaire's Row.' This Gothic revival/cottage style house has a rich history, having been owned by prominent families including the Howes and Childs, as well as notable figures like Michael L. Benedum. Currently owned by Chatham University, it was designated a historic landmark by the City of Pittsburgh in 1986 and by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation in 2004, making it a point of interest for both tourists and researchers alike.
