Market Building, Penzance

The Market Building in Penzance, Cornwall, is a Grade I listed structure with a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1614. Originally serving as a market, guildhall, and prison, the current building was completed in 1838 and features a striking granite façade topped with a lead-covered dome. Designed to divert attention from the surrounding streets, it includes a prominent portico and a large clock, once deemed the largest in the West of England. The building has undergone various uses over the years, including housing a grammar school and a Corn Exchange. Currently, it is partially occupied by Lloyds Bank, while restoration efforts are underway to address its deteriorating condition, with plans for further renovations in 2025.
