United States Custom House, Court House, and Post Office (Chicago, 1880)

The United States Custom House, Court House, and Post Office, completed in 1880, served as a federal government building in Chicago until 1896. Designed by architect James G. Gill, it housed several important federal courts, including the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Despite its historical significance, the building was poorly constructed and deemed unsafe by the 1890s, leading to its demolition. The stone from the building was repurposed for the Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee. A new federal building was constructed on the same site between 1898 and 1905.
