Big Talbot Island shell middens

Big Talbot Island State Park contains visible prehistoric shell middens and other archaeological features created by Native American communities that occupied the area before European contact. These shell deposits line parts of the shoreline and have been documented by state archaeological surveys as evidence of long-term indigenous use of the coastal environment. The park protects these sites as part of Florida's cultural and natural heritage and provides public access to view coastal archaeology in situ.
