Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfù

The Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfù, established in 1693 and converted into a theatre in 1720, was the first modern theatre in Greece and a pivotal center for Greek opera from 1733 to 1893. Located in Corfu, it attracted Italian musicians and composers, fostering a unique blend of Italian and Corfiot musical traditions that contributed to the development of the Ionian School of Music. The theatre hosted its first opera in 1733 and continued to stage performances even during tumultuous times, such as the French occupation and the Russia-Ottoman siege. Notably, it was the venue for the first opera composed in Greek, O ypopsifios, in 1867. Despite its destruction during World War II, the theatre's legacy remains significant in the history of modern Greek music and culture.
