Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Frank Furness building)

The Academy's 1871–1876 building on Broad Street was designed by Frank Furness and George W. Hewitt and is celebrated for its bold Victorian Gothic architecture and inventive use of polychrome brick, stone, and iron. The design broke with academic historicism of the period through muscular forms, asymmetric massing, and richly detailed ornamentation that influenced later American architectural expression. The building houses the oldest art school and museum in the United States in its historic purpose-built quarters.
