Winterslow Hut

The Winterslow Hut, a historic late 17th-century coaching inn located on the London to Exeter stagecoach route in Wiltshire, England, served as a vital resting place for travelers and drovers due to its strategic location on Salisbury Plain. Notably, the inn attracted the renowned critic and essayist William Hazlitt in the early 19th century, who produced significant works during his stays. The inn gained national notoriety when an escaped lioness attacked a mail coach outside its doors in 1816. During World War II, it served as accommodation for RAF officers. Although it operated as the Pheasant Hotel in the 20th century, the inn closed in 2007 and has since been converted into residential dwellings.
