Ether Dome (Massachusetts General Hospital)

The Ether Dome is an operating theater in the Bulfinch Building of Massachusetts General Hospital where, on October 16, 1846, William T. G. Morton demonstrated the public use of ether as a surgical anesthetic. The event is widely cited as the first public demonstration of surgical anesthesia and is interpreted at the site as a milestone in medical history. The Dome is preserved as a historic space within MGH and is open to visitors through the hospital's museum and tour programs.
