Scripps coastal exposures documented by Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Cliffs and bluffs near Scripps Institution of Oceanography expose the Pliocene Scripps Formation and other marine terrace deposits that have yielded fossil marine invertebrates and vertebrate remains documented in published research by Scripps scientists. The Scripps Pier and adjacent shoreline have been focal points for geological and paleontological study of these strata. Research and collections at Scripps have contributed to regional understanding of San Diego's Pliocene–Pleistocene fossil record.
