Belle Isle Aquarium (historic public aquarium)

The Belle Isle Aquarium opened in 1904 on Belle Isle and is one of the oldest public aquariums in the United States. The aquarium closed in 2005 during municipal budget cuts and later reopened to the public in 2012 after restoration efforts. The building and its historic exhibits are part of Belle Isle Park's early-20th-century recreational infrastructure.
