Tampere Cathedral

Tampere Cathedral, a stunning Lutheran church in Tampere, Finland, serves as the seat of the Diocese of Tampere. Designed by Lars Sonck in the National Romantic style, it was constructed between 1902 and 1907. The cathedral is renowned for its striking frescoes by symbolist artist Hugo Simberg, created between 1905 and 1906, which sparked controversy for their bold themes, including The Wounded Angel and The Garden of Death. Notably, a winged serpent painting on the ceiling has been interpreted as a symbol of sin. The altar-piece, depicting the resurrection of all races, was painted by Magnus Enckell, adding to the cathedral's artistic significance.
