Highfield Cocoa and Coffee House

The Highfield Cocoa and Coffee House, built in 1877 in Sheffield, England, was a pioneering non-alcoholic entertainment venue aimed at the working class. Designed by M. E. Hadfield & Son, it featured a coffee, tea, and cocoa bar, a library, billiards room, and skittle alley. Initially popular, it closed in 1908 and later served as a confectioner's shop and showroom. In 1967, Modernist friezes were added to its façade. Recently, plans for demolition to make way for new flats have sparked objections from local historic preservation groups, highlighting the building's architectural significance and historical value.
