Markham Building

The Markham Building, completed in 1897, was once the tallest structure in Johannesburg, South Africa. This six-storey late Victorian building features a distinctive clock tower with a large clock imported from Scotland and an artist studio. Known as 'Markham's Folly' for its prominent position in the city, it was saved from demolition in 1978. Designed by architect George Ransome, the building showcases a unique Second Empire-style roof and porthole windows, giving it a charming Parisian ambiance. Originally owned by Henry William Markham, the building reflects the rich architectural and historical heritage of Johannesburg.
